There is one decision that determines whether you like your electric shaver, and it is made before you look at any model: foil or rotary. Everything else on a specification sheet changes how convenient the shaver is. The cutting system changes how the shave feels and how close it gets.
Foil or rotary, decided by your hair
A foil shaver runs blades that oscillate side to side underneath a thin perforated metal screen. Hair enters through the perforations and is cut against the inside of the screen. Because the screen is straight and the blades move in one axis, a foil shaver excels on flat planes and on hair growing in a consistent direction, and it is generally the closer of the two.
A rotary shaver spins circular cutters underneath three or four round perforated heads that pivot independently. Each head settles onto whatever angle of skin it meets, and because the cutters turn rather than oscillate, they take hair growing in any direction equally well.

The last row is the one that matters most and is never on the box. The brands, and what each is known for
Braun built its Series range around foils and is the reference point for foil shavers, with the higher numbers in the range adding motor power, cleaning stations and wet use rather than a closer cut. Philips, sold as Norelco in North America, owns the rotary side and its heads pivot more freely than most.

Wet, dry, or both

Lifespan, and the part that fails first
An electric shaver has three wear items and they fail on different schedules.
Foils and cutter blocks, or rotary heads. Roughly a year to eighteen months of regular use, with the maker publishing a figure for the specific model. A worn foil is thin and easily torn, and a torn foil will cut skin, so replace it on schedule rather than on feel. Trimmers, attachments and edging
Most shavers include a pop-up trimmer, and its usefulness depends entirely on whether the blade sits on a straight edge you can see. A trimmer buried behind the head, at an angle, will not hold a sideburn line.

Travel cases. Real, and unrelated to the shave.

Three situations come up often enough to name.
You shave once a week. Electric shavers work best on one to three days of growth. A week of stubble packs the cutters and takes several passes, and a blade handles it better after a trim.
You want a genuinely smooth face for a specific reason. Photographs, a stage, a close-fitting mask seal. No electric reaches that, and buying a more expensive one will not change it.
