Best Shaving Brush: Badger, Boar or Synthetic

Synthetic knots lather as well as badger hair and cost less.

A shaving brush does three jobs: it carries water into the soap, whips air through the mixture to build lather, and lifts the beard hair so the blade meets each hair upright rather than flattened against the skin. That third job is the one fingers cannot do, and it is the reason a brush still improves a safety razor shave decades after the aerosol can arrived.

Fibre choice is a preference; knot size and loft are the specifications that change how a brush behaves. Most buying advice reverses that.

Synthetic knots are extruded polyester filaments, tapered at the tip so they finish soft. The good ones lather any soap quickly, dry in about an hour, cost less than comparable badger, and never shed. Their one genuine limitation is water capacity: the fibres are not porous, so a synthetic holds water between the filaments rather than inside them and gives it up faster during a lather.

Badger holds far more water because the hair is porous, which means a loaded badger brush keeps releasing water into the lather all the way through a three-pass shave. It also has a specific feel, dense and slightly heavy, with tips that flow rather than spring back. That feel is the real reason people buy badger, and it is a fair reason. It is not a better lather.

Badger grades are marketing terms with no standard behind them. Pure, best, super and silvertip broadly track from coarse dark hair towards fine pale tips, and two brands’ silvertips can be nothing alike. Judge the brush, not the label.

Boar is the traditional cheap knot and the most misunderstood. New boar bristle is genuinely scratchy. With repeated wetting and drying the tips split into finer ends, and after twenty to thirty shaves the brush is noticeably softer while keeping its stiff backbone. That combination, stiff shaft and split soft tip, is excellent for face lathering hard soaps.

Horse hair sits between boar and badger and comes from mane and tail trimmings rather than slaughter. It is uncommon and worth knowing about mainly if the badger question bothers you.

Where badger hair comes from

Badger knots are a by-product of animals culled or farmed, mostly in China, and the supply chain has no meaningful welfare certification behind it. That is a straightforward fact rather than an argument, and it is the main reason synthetics moved from a compromise to the default in about a decade.

Since a synthetic now matches badger on the thing a brush is for, the case for buying badger has narrowed to the feel of it. Anyone uncomfortable with the sourcing loses nothing on performance by skipping it.

Knot size and loft, the numbers that matter

Knot size is the diameter of the fibre bundle where it emerges from the handle, in millimetres. It is not the width of the fanned top, which is always larger.

  • 20 to 21 mm. Precise, easy on the upper lip, holds enough for one or two passes. Good for travel.
  • 22 to 24 mm. The range that suits most faces and most routines. Enough lather for three passes with a reload, still controllable on the face.
  • 26 mm and up. Holds lather for three passes without reloading, feels like painting with a mop, and is more at home in a bowl than on a face.

Loft is the height of the fibre from the handle to the tip, also in millimetres, and it decides stiffness. A low loft of about 45 to 50 mm on a 24 mm knot gives a stiff brush with strong backbone that scrubs soap out of a hard puck and drives lather into the beard. A high loft of 55 mm and up on the same knot gives a floppy, luxurious brush that paints lather on and struggles to load a hard soap.

Loft-to-knot ratio is the specification worth checking and the one most listings omit. Around twice the knot diameter is a balanced brush. Much more than that and it will feel weak on a puck.

Match the brush to how you lather

Face lathering favours a stiffer brush with moderate loft, because the bristles are doing mechanical work against your stubble and need backbone to push through it. Boar, or a dense synthetic at around 50 mm loft.

Bowl lathering favours softer and larger. The bowl provides the resistance, so a floppier badger with a higher loft whips air in nicely and holds enough lather for the whole shave.

Hard pucks need backbone to load. Creams and croaps load off almost anything. If you use a hard soap and face lather, buy stiffer than the pretty photographs suggest.

Handles do nothing, with one exception

Resin, wood, metal and horn all perform identically, because none of them touch your face or the lather. Buy the one you like looking at.

The exception is grip and balance when your hands are wet and soapy. A short, wide handle with some texture is easier to control than a tall polished cylinder, and a metal handle on a small knot can feel top-heavy in reverse, pulling the brush out of your fingers on the downstroke. If you can hold it before buying, do.

Break-in, shedding and care

A natural knot sheds a few hairs in the first several uses. That is the glue plug releasing fibres it never gripped, and it stops. Shedding that continues for months means the plug is deteriorating, which is nearly always caused by storing the brush wet with the handle down so water sits against the base.

Three habits make a brush last years:

  1. Shake it out hard after rinsing, then squeeze gently from the base towards the tips. Do not wring it.
  2. Dry it bristles down or on its side, on a stand or laid on a shelf. Standing it upright funnels water into the glue.
  3. Strip the soap occasionally. Soap scum builds in the base of the knot, especially in hard water, and a rinse in warm water with a little vinegar or a mild shampoo restores the flow.

Never soak a natural brush in boiling water, and never leave it in a closed travel tube while damp.

Using the brush without wrecking it

Two motions do everything. Swirling loads soap and builds volume. Painting, drawing the tips across the face in short strokes, distributes lather evenly and lays the hair in one direction. Swirl to build, paint to finish.

Pressure is where brushes get destroyed. Pushing hard enough to splay the knot flat against your cheek bends the fibres past their natural arc, and repeated over months it permanently opens the fan and kills the backbone. Enough pressure to feel the tips bend slightly is all a brush needs, and lather builds faster that way because the tips, not the shafts, are doing the whipping.

A new brush should be soaked in warm water while your beard hydrates, which is the same two to three minutes either way. Then shake it out. A dripping brush starts the lather far too wet and washes soap down the drain, which is the usual reason people think a puck is disappearing quickly.

When a brush is finished

A well-treated synthetic runs for years and fails suddenly, usually by the filaments losing their taper and starting to feel bristly at the tips. There is no reviving that.

A natural knot degrades slowly, and the symptom is loss of backbone: the brush that used to load a hard puck in twenty seconds now flops over and skates across it. That is fibre fatigue plus soap scum in the base of the knot, and the second half is fixable. Strip the knot with warm water and a little vinegar, rinse thoroughly, and see whether the stiffness comes back before replacing anything.

Handles outlast knots by a wide margin. Reknotting, which means pulling the old plug out and gluing a new knot in, is a straightforward job that keeps a handle you like. It costs a fraction of a new brush and is the reason handles are sold separately at all.

What not to buy

A cheap badger in a gift set. Low-grade badger is coarse, prickly and floppy at once, which is the worst of both fibres. A synthetic at the same money will outperform it comfortably.

A brush chosen by knot size alone. A 26 mm knot at a 60 mm loft is a soft mop that cannot load a puck, whatever the listing implies about capacity.

A boar brush judged on the first shave. It is meant to be scratchy at that point. Judging it before twenty shaves is judging a different brush.

The short version

A synthetic knot at 22 to 24 millimetres with a loft around 50 millimetres does everything most people need, costs less than badger and dries between shaves. Choose boar instead if you face lather hard soaps and do not mind a month of break-in. Choose badger if you want the feel of it and accept that you are paying for feel. Then spend the difference on the soap, which changes the shave more than the brush does.

Is a badger brush better than a synthetic one?

No. Modern synthetic knots match or beat badger on lather performance and cost less. Badger holds more water and has a distinctly different feel against the face, softer at the tips and heavier when loaded, which many people prefer and none of which produces better lather. Buy synthetic if you want the practical choice, badger if you want the feel, and do not expect either to shave you closer.

What knot size should a shaving brush have?

Between 22 and 24 millimetres suits nearly everyone. Smaller knots around 20 millimetres are precise, easy to control on the upper lip, and hold less lather. Larger knots from 26 millimetres up hold enough for three passes without reloading and feel unwieldy for face lathering. Knot size is the diameter of the fibre bundle where it leaves the handle, not the width of the fanned tips.

How long does a boar brush take to break in?

Around twenty to thirty shaves. Boar bristle is stiff and scratchy when new, and the tips split with repeated wetting and drying into finer ends that feel much softer. That splitting is the break-in, and it is a physical change in the bristle rather than a habituation. Soak a new boar brush for a few minutes before each of the first several uses to speed it up.

Why is my shaving brush shedding hairs?

A few loose hairs in the first several uses is normal for any natural knot, because the glue plug never captures every fibre. Continuous shedding after that points at a failing glue plug, usually from storing the brush wet, handle down, so water sits in the base. Shake the brush out hard and dry it bristles down or on its side, and never leave it standing in a puddle.

Do I need a brush if I use shaving cream?

Not strictly, and it still helps. The brush works water into the cream and, more usefully, stands the beard hair upright so the blade meets each hair end-on instead of pressing it flat against the skin. Fingers do neither. For a single cartridge pass, fingers are fine. For a safety razor or a straight razor taking two or three passes, use a brush.
