The difference between an electric shaver and a razor is one measurement: where the hair is cut relative to the surface of your skin. Everything else people argue about follows from it.
An electric shaver cuts the hair above the skin line. The foil or the rotary head holds the cutting edge a fraction of a millimetre clear of the skin, and the hair is severed where it pokes through.
A single blade, in a double-edge or straight razor, cuts at or just above the surface with nothing lifting the hair first.
A multi-blade cartridge does something different again. It works by hysteresis: the leading blade pulls the hair up out of the follicle, a following blade severs it, and the cut end retracts below the skin surface.
Why that one measurement decides everything
Rank those three by how short the stubble ends up and you get the closeness ranking: cartridge, then single blade, then electric. Rank them by how likely they are to give you bumps and you get exactly the same order, in the same direction.
That is not a coincidence. A hair severed below the skin surface leaves a sharp end sitting inside the follicle, and that end can grow into the follicle wall instead of out of it. The result is an inflamed follicle, which is a razor bump. Cut the hair above the skin line and there is no retracted end and nothing to re-enter.
So the trade is fixed: closeness and irritation are the same variable measured twice. Any product claiming to give you a cartridge-close shave with electric-level comfort is claiming to have moved a line that does not move.

Closeness, in practical terms
A well-maintained foil shaver used dry on stretched skin gets close enough that nobody at conversational distance can tell. You will know, because you can feel it when you run a hand up your neck against the growth.
A single-blade razor with two passes leaves skin that feels smooth in both directions. A cartridge with three passes leaves it smoother still, for a few hours, and then produces the ingrowns.
The question worth asking is not which is closest but how close you actually need to be, and how often. Most people need genuinely bare skin rarely, for a photograph, a formal occasion, or a mask seal. On the other three hundred days, the difference is one they notice with a hand and nobody else notices at all.
Irritation, split into two problems
Razor burn and razor bumps are different things and people treat them as one.
Razor burn is mechanical or chemical irritation of the skin surface, caused by friction, a dull blade, too much pressure, or alcohol afterwards. It shows up within minutes to an hour. Both systems can cause it. Electrics cause it through pressure and heat, blades through drag and repeated passes.
Razor bumps are inflamed follicles from a hair re-entering the skin, and they appear over one to three days. This is where the two systems genuinely differ, and where the electric wins on mechanism rather than on technique.
If your redness arrives the same morning, the fix is technique and a fresh cutting surface, whichever system you use. The adjustment period nobody warns you about
Switching from a blade to an electric is not a like-for-like swap you can evaluate on the first morning. It takes two to three weeks, and the first fortnight runs against you.
Two things are changing at once. Your skin adapts to being abraded by a moving screen rather than sliced by an edge, which shows up as redness that later stops happening. And your hand learns a motion that a razor never taught it: slow strokes against the grain with a foil, slow overlapping circles with a rotary, and no pressure with either.
Judge the shaver at week four, not on day three. The most common way people conclude that electric shaving does not suit them is by buying a second shaver in week two, discovering it behaves like the first, and blaming the technology. Time, cost and upkeep
Time. An electric shave takes three to five minutes with no preparation, no sink and no water. A wet shave needs two to three minutes of warm water first, because that is how long hair takes to hydrate enough to cut cleanly, then a lather and two passes. Consumables. Cartridges last five to seven shaves. Double-edge blades last three to seven shaves and are the cheapest consumable in shaving by a wide margin. Foil or rotary head sets are replaced roughly annually to every eighteen months.
The device itself. This is the hidden difference. A safety razor is a piece of metal that outlives you. An electric shaver has a battery that is usually not replaceable, and that battery, rather than the cutters, is what ends its life.
Travel. Blades are restricted in cabin baggage in many places and an electric is not, which is a small point that becomes a large one if you fly often.
Who should use which
- Bumps on the neck within two days of shaving: electric, or a single blade with two passes and no against-the-grain third.
- You want visibly and tangibly smooth skin: a single-blade razor, with the grain then across.
- You shave every morning in five minutes: electric.

Where each one is wrong, and for whom
The general advice above inverts in a few situations that are common enough to name.
An electric is wrong for a week of growth. Cutters handle roughly one to three days of stubble. Past that, hair packs into the head, the motor bogs and you make five passes over the same skin. If you shave weekly, a blade after a quick trim is both faster and gentler.
A blade is wrong on skin that is already inflamed. Shaving over an existing bump decapitates it and adds a fresh wound to a follicle that is already fighting. On a bad week, an electric over the affected area is the lower-damage option, and skipping a day is better than either.
An electric is wrong if you keep a sharp beard line. It shaves the field and cannot draw the edge, so you end up owning a trimmer or a razor anyway.
A cartridge is wrong for almost anyone with recurring ingrowns, and it is the default most people are using when they develop them. Moving from five blades to one changes the mechanism rather than the technique, which is why it works when careful shaving has not.
Neither is right if you shave daily against the grain. The pass order matters more than the tool: with the grain first, across the grain second, and against the grain third and optional. Anyone with bump-prone skin should stop at two passes permanently, on either system.
What does not settle the argument
Blade count. More blades is more hysteresis, not a better shave. Past three the additional blades are adding drag and retraction.
Marketing comparisons. Any claim that an electric shaves as close as a blade is describing a result the mechanism cannot produce.
Which one your father used. Growth pattern, hair coarseness and skin reactivity are the variables, and they are only partly inherited.
Price. A mid-range shaver of the right type beats a flagship of the wrong one, and a plain double-edge razor outperforms an expensive cartridge system for bump-prone skin.
Owning both is not a compromise
The arrangement most long-term shavers land on is an electric on weekdays and a blade at the weekend. It is not indecision. Spacing out how often an edge passes over the same skin does more for chronic irritation than any aftershave product, and it lets you have the close shave on the days it matters.
The rule is not to do both on the same day. Two mechanical passes over one face, one abrading and one slicing, is how you turn mild redness into a week of it.
The short version
An electric cuts above the skin line, so it is the least close option and the kindest to skin that produces bumps.
