Compare a safety razor and a cartridge on how they physically remove hair and most of the argument settles itself. A cartridge is engineered to cut each hair below the skin surface. A single blade cuts it at the surface. Every downstream difference in irritation, ingrown hairs and closeness traces back to that.
The parts that do not settle themselves are speed, skill and travel, and those are real enough that plenty of people who understand the mechanism still keep a cartridge in the cupboard.
The mechanism, which is the whole comparison
A multi-blade cartridge works by hysteresis. The leading blade catches the hair and pulls it slightly up out of the follicle. A following blade severs it while it is stretched. The hair then relaxes and the cut end retracts below the skin surface.
That is a clever way to get a very close result from one stroke, and it is also the origin of the most common shaving complaint. A hair cut below the surface has to grow back out through the follicle opening, and a curved or coarse hair can meet the follicle wall from the inside instead. That is an ingrown hair, and inflamed follicles produced this way are razor bumps.
A single blade never lifts the hair. It severs it at or just above the skin surface, so there is no retraction and no below-surface starting point. The full anatomy of the tool is in what a safety razor is.
Note what this does not claim. Razor burn is a different thing with a different cause: surface irritation from friction, a dull edge, pressure or alcohol afterwards, appearing within minutes to an hour. Razor bumps appear over one to three days. A safety razor can absolutely give you razor burn if you press.

Closeness, properly compared
A cartridge wins on one pass and a safety razor wins on the shave. Four blades tracking the same stroke remove more per pass than one blade can, which is exactly what the format was built for.
Give the safety razor its two or three passes, re-lathering between each, and the result is at least as smooth. It also stays smooth for a comparable time, because closeness is about how much hair is left standing rather than how the cut was achieved.
The comparison people actually make is unfair in the other direction, though: a first-week safety razor shave against a cartridge shave from someone with twenty years of practice. Wait a fortnight before judging.
Irritation and skin
Two things make a cartridge harder on skin than the blade count alone suggests.
The first is drag. Four edges cross the same patch of skin in one stroke, and each one has friction. A lubricating strip mitigates it, then wears out well before the blades do, at which point most people keep using the cartridge anyway.
The second is pressure. A pivoting head is designed to be pushed into the face, so the habit is trained in. Transfer that pressure to a safety razor and you will get razor burn immediately, which is why the technique guide treats no-pressure as the primary skill.
There is a case where a cartridge is genuinely kinder, and it deserves saying plainly: someone shaving in a hurry, in bad light, without proper lather. A cartridge is very tolerant of a poor shave. A safety razor is not. If the shave you will actually perform is a rushed one, the tolerant tool may be the right tool.
Cost, without pretending it is complicated
The cartridge razor is cheap or free at the point of purchase, because the handle exists to sell you refills that only fit it. The safety razor costs more once and then never again, with the blade being the sole consumable, made to a century-old standard by dozens of competing factories on several continents.
Over any horizon longer than a few months the safety razor is far cheaper per shave, and nothing about the market suggests that will change, because no manufacturer controls the blade format.
Speed, travel and the awkward practicalities
Speed. Three minutes against five to ten. Over a working week that is real, and it is the most common reason someone with a full safety razor setup still uses a cartridge on weekday mornings.
Travel. Loose double edge blades are not permitted in cabin baggage under most airport security rules. Cartridges travel freely. If you fly with hand luggage only, either pack the razor empty and buy blades on arrival, which is easy since they are sold nearly everywhere, or take the cartridge.
Shower shaving. A cartridge works blind. A safety razor needs a mirror, because the angle is set by eye until the hand knows it.
Other people. A loaded double edge blade left on the side of the bath is a hazard in a way a cartridge is not.
Where disposables and twin blades sit
The comparison is usually framed as two options, and there are really four.
Disposable razors, the whole-unit-thrown-away kind, are cartridges with the trade pushed to its limit: cheapest to buy, worst to run, most plastic per shave, and typically two or three blades, so the hysteresis mechanism still applies.
Twin-blade cartridges are the interesting middle. Two blades lift and cut less aggressively than five, so the retraction is smaller, and many people who cannot get on with a safety razor find a twin gentler than a modern five-blade head. If the mechanism above is your problem but the technique is not something you want to learn, this is the change worth trying.
Modern five-blade heads with a trimmer, pivot and lubricating strip are the most engineered and the hardest on reactive skin, because every added edge is another pass across the same skin in one stroke.
Blade count is the axis, not brand. Fewer edges means less lifting, less drag and less closeness per pass.
Missed days and long stubble
The two razors also handle a skipped week differently.
A cartridge clogs. Long hair packs the gaps between blades, and rinsing under a tap stops clearing it, which is why the first shave after a holiday ruins a cartridge that had three shaves left in it.
A safety razor handles length better because there is one blade and one gap to clear, and an open comb head handles it better still, since the teeth channel long stubble to the edge instead of letting it mat. Trim anything past about a centimetre with clippers first, whichever razor you use.
Who should switch, and who should not
Switch if:
- You get ingrown hairs or bumps from your current razor. This is the strongest reason and the mechanism above is why.
- You shave three or more times a week and would rather spend eight minutes than three.
- You want to stop buying proprietary refills, or stop throwing away plastic heads.
Do not switch if:
- Your shave happens in the shower, in three minutes, with no mirror, and that is not negotiable.
- You fly weekly with hand baggage only.
- Your current razor causes you no trouble at all. A tool that works is not a problem in need of a solution.
There is a middle option most guides skip: keep both. Safety razor at the weekend and on any day you have time, cartridge on the mornings you do not. The skin benefit tracks how often you avoid the below-surface cut, so two or three safety razor shaves a week is meaningfully better than none.
If you are switching

Then change three habits: hydrate the beard for two to three minutes before you start, hold the head at roughly 30 degrees, and stop pressing. Shave with the grain first and across it second. Map your grain once with the grain map, because the neck almost always contains a patch that grows in a direction you have been ignoring.
Do not add the against-the-grain pass in the first fortnight, and if you switched to fix bumps, do not add it at all. Cutting against the grain takes the hair below the skin surface, which reproduces the exact condition the cartridge was creating. Someone who switches razors and keeps chasing a baby-smooth third pass will conclude that safety razors did nothing for their skin, and the razor was never the variable that mattered.
The verdict
For skin that reacts to shaving, the safety razor is the better tool and the reason is mechanical rather than aesthetic: it cuts at the surface instead of below it. For a fast, tolerant, low-skill shave, the cartridge still wins, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. Cost and waste both favour the safety razor over any timeframe longer than a couple of months.
If you take one thing from this comparison, take the pass order rather than the razor. Two passes with either tool beats three passes with either tool for anyone whose skin gets angry, and that decision costs nothing to make.
